No Mr. Hines . . . You Have Not Annoyed The Write Agenda™ . . .
Once again, the always hyper-reactive, Jim Hines, spoke before thinking. However, that’s the least significant feature of his character traits. Mr. Hines, while commenting on the 2013 SFWA Elections, stated that his “candidacy for South Central Regional Director appears to have annoyed the folks at The Write Agenda.” Hines was referring to our recent post wherein we raised questions regarding his announcement that he was running for the SFWA’s South/Central Regional Director position . . . not the President’s position that is being vacated by John Scalzi. It’s actually Hines that appears to be “annoyed” by our coverage of 2013 SFWA Presidential Candidate, Theodore Beale.
To clarify our post, we were actually surprised that Hines wasn’t running for the 2013 SFWA Presidential seat. It wasn’t that we were “annoyed” by his candidacy for the SFWA’s South/Central Regional Director position. What caught our attention, is that Hines recognizes something that Scalzi never comprehended. In his (Hine’s) post, he clearly recognized what the demands and requirements are to serve the SFWA membership effectively. He appeared to publicly indicate that his family, career and priorities have to come first. In other words, he would not throw himself into the 2013 SFWA Presidential Election if he could not be completely engaged as an effective leader. That’s how we interpreted Hine’s statement; he does not appear to be the kind of individual that would do something half-heartedly. That’s admirable and we, The Write Agenda™, just wanted to point that out. We actually applaud Jim Hines for recognizing the rigors, demands and degree of commitment required of an individual to serve as President of the SFWA. Scalzi had another idea regarding his priorities:
I’ve been a SFWA member long enough to know that it’s a fairly thankless position, with lots of herding cats and dealing with aggravating minutiae, and I have a career to look after at the moment. [Emphasis added]
Jim Hines also recognizes that the SFWA needs to change. He’s raised issues similar to those raised by the 2013 SFWA Presidential Candidates, Theodore Beale and Steven Gould:
Does the current administration of the SFWA listen to and represent the membership?
Why hasn’t the organization “moved forward”?
Why is the biggest priority (according to Hines) is to complete the reincorporation process?
Why is Hines concerned about “eligible writers who have turned away, believing—rightfully or wrongfully—[they] we have nothing to offer, or that [they] are (SFWA) too narrow in the writers we welcome and celebrate in our ranks”?
Interestingly, the “state” of the membership of the SFWA has caught the attention of everyone. We do wish Mr. Hines the best of luck during the 2013 SFWA elections. As a budding leader for the SFWA, Hines does appear to have more moxy than Scalzi has ever demonstrated; he (Hines) could have the potential to be a Moses for the SFWA in the future. Most important is Hines’ sense of priority and dedication. We like that.
There’s another thing that we like about Jim Hines; he openly discusses his income as a writer. Hines has become a very prolific writer with very respectable Amazon Sales Rankings. Comparatively, Victoria Strauss’ sales pale compared to Hines as a relative new comer. We would love to see Victoria Strauss publicly discuss her income in this fashion. There’s been a lot of speculation regarding Strauss’ true occupation and the real source of her income . . . it doesn’t appear to come from royalties or advances. Strauss, who rarely makes public appearances, unless they are online, has never indicated what her day job or true occupation actually is. Judging by the copious daily Internet postings it’s likely that she doesn’t have one. Her income has to come from other sources or a sugar daddy; it’s certainly not from book sales (based on her sales rankings). (Note: Interestingly Strauss’ Amazon Rankings are also pale compared to Beale’s.) If you have a theory, opinion or tip on Victoria Strauss’ real occupation? Contact us here.
