[Theodore Beale's blog posting today. Once again, Beale has demonstrated that he is a real force to be reckoned with and why Scalzi, Strauss, Hines, Nielsen-Hayden & others fear him. Well done "Theo" . . .  Well done. Interesting that the statistics have increased during the 2013 SFWA Election - The Write Agenda]

The One Million month

Thanks very much to everyone who visited here in April, especially those who took the time to get involved in the various discussions in the comments.  I remember scoffing when ten years ago a reader predicted that this blog would one day have a million pageviews in a year, so it seems incredible to me that VP and AG now see that level of traffic in a single month.

With a few notable exceptions, most blogs hide their traffic reports these days, but I think this is a tactical blunder.  The primary problem with doing so is that it allows the Left to dishonestly attempt to marginalize right-wing blogs in the eyes of others.  Recall that I have been portrayed for ten years as an extremist whack-job whose writing no one read even as the readership steadily grown, and I was regularly reminded that PZ Myers, John Scalzi, and a number of other left-wing bloggers all had much bigger blog readerships than I did… until it was revealed late last year that the traffic here alone, (never mind that of the  WND columns that those bloggers were reading and attacking), had passed up some of those blogs almost two years ago!  Never forget, the Left is heavily dependent upon lies, and one of their biggest lies, perhaps the one to which they resort the most readily, concerns their pretense that their opinions enjoy much more popularity than they actually do.  Therefore, the more metrics that are visible to everyone, the less they can get away with it.

That is why I make my Sitemeter and Google Analytics statistics public.  (VP uses the old template, which is why there is no monthly traffic widget in the sidebar as is the case with AG.) That’s why I’ve begun a quarterly Top 10 Game blogs report that I expect to expand to a Top 25 report in the second quarter. That’s why I encourage everyone who is in any way sympathetic to the neoreactionary traditional Relightenment to be open and public with their statistics. The truth is on our side. Victory through data!

Let’s face it, it is very difficult for the rabbits of Whatever to continue to claim that the Chief Gamma Rabbit of their warren is a vastly influential individual, and their sick transcis-quax-gendered view of human intersexual relations is the mainstream perspective, when everyone now realizes that Whatever has only two-thirds the traffic of my blogs and one-quarter that of the Great Prophet of the Crimson Arts.  Open metrics make it clear that it is the influential Cathedralites such as Jim Hines (Alexa Rank 729,110) and Making Light (375,254), who are actually the marginal ones. Despite their artificially elevated positions in the field of SF/F, they cannot maintain sizable blog readerships, not even with the benefit of occasional puffing by their ideological allies in the mainstream media.  They may be big fish, but they are big fish in a much smaller pond than the ocean they attempt to claim.

It’s not that their opinions aren’t relevant or that no one shares them, it is merely that their perspective is nowhere nearly as dominant as they are desperate to have you believe.  They can run from debate and they can refuse to permit substantive criticism or even a semblance of genuine discourse on their sites, but the one thing they cannot avoid is the harsh light of statistical reality exposing their pretenses.

It is ludicrous to imagine that it is popular writers such as Sarah Hoyt and Larry Correia who are the societal outsiders when their influence is an order of magnitude or more larger than most of the supposed “big names” in modern SF/F.   Sure, the Cathredralites sell more books, for the time being, because their capture of the genre’s gatekeepers means they have access to its media and distribution channels. But what we are seeing now is the early stages of a Fox News-style transformation in the SF/F industry, as new media outlets and new transmission channels is in the process of seriously upending the tilted playing field.  The cultural battle in SF/F isn’t over, as the self-appointed winners would have you believe, the heavy cavalry is just beginning to enter the field and the unarmored footmen without shields are quaking.

However, the fact that the Left is wrong about equality, wrong about economics, wrong about the past, and wrong about the future does not mean there is nothing that we of the Right cannot learn from them.  The one thing the Left does very, very well is the force-multiplication of its various assets, no matter how small and insignificant they truly are, and that is something that the neoreactionary Right will have to learn in order to mitigate the damage our progressive counterparts have inflicted upon us and upon themselves.  That’s why I’ve created the Standout Authors and Friends of Narnia, and I encourage other writers and bloggers of the Right to devote at least some effort to building up others of the Right even as they continue to pursue their own diverse and independent ambitions.

Consider that Prospect Magazine declared the top World Thinkers of 2013 on the basis of 10,000 votes.  10,000 votes!   That’s nothing, and yet the Left will gravely – and absurdly – pretend, on that basis, that Richard Dawkins is widely considered to be the greatest intellectual of our time.

We can do better. We should do better. We will do better.

The American Society of Journalists and Authors schedules its annual conference in New York City each spring.  This year, as part of its invited panel, Victoria Strauss and Richard White of Writer Beware have been invited to serve as keynote panelists.

According to the Write Agenda, these two individuals have made false reports and claims about their competitors on their blogs, while hiding the fact that their own attorney was under investigation in Illinois for years, and subsequently suspended from practicing law for defrauding the estate of John Steinbeck.

At over 200 dollars a person for each day of the session, the Write Agenda cautions people seeking to find professional contacts at the seminar to reconsider how they spend their hard-earned money on an expensive day traveling to and from Manhattan, and listening to reports that are not an accurate portrayal of the business.

The ASJA has responded to the Write Agenda, stating that the conference will continue exactly as planned.

A good journalist checks his/her facts, and does not depend completely  on sources which have a conflict of interest or which may not be honest and reliable.

There are more pressing issues for the SFWA.  Mr. Gould, as a prospective President for the SFWA, why have you not challenged Victoria Strauss and Ann “A.C.” Crispin for utilizing  SFWA resources (i.e. Writer Beware) to promote their books on the the site? We, The Write Agenda, rest our case. Steven Gould is the “status quo” candidate for the SFWA. It’s very hypocritical to complain about an “outsider”using #SFWA on Twitter and then say nothing about Victoria Strauss and Ann “A.C.” Crispin using Writer Beware (SFWA resources) to promote their own books? State and Federal agencies frown on this type of inurement. Step up Gould and don’t be a clone of John “No Balls” Scalzi! If anything is “annoying” it’s your (Gould) failure to to address these issues prior to the 2013 SFWA election.

Self-promotion . . . not bad for a non-profit organization.

2013 SFWA ELECTION COVERAGE: Our Endorsement for SFWA President . . .

When great changes occur in history, when great principles are involved, as a rule the majority are wrong. The minority are right.

Eugene V. Debs

As most of you know by now, John Scalzi is stepping down as president of the Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers of America at the end of his term, which concludes on June 30. On July 1, the organization will have a new president. Theodore Beale and Steven Gould have both announced that that they are running for the position. Steven Gould’s announcement made John Scalzi “happy” and he “fully and unreservedly” endorsed him for President of the SFWA. This has been the extent of Steven Gould’s “campaign” for the SFWA Presidency. If you’re Steven Gould, the strategy is simple: post a vague platform by the deadline, receive an endorsement from the outgoing president and then . . .  say or do nothing else. Then what? Anticipate a landslide victory? We think not. We think that this will be the most heavily voted election in the SFWA’s history.

Gould’s lack of campaigning raises many questions. His laid-back campaign (i.e. say or do nothing else ) and lack of proactively should serve as a warning; more of the same? Gould appears to be the proverbial yes-man.

Scalzi, who has had an ongoing feud with Beale, posted an endorsement for Gould that is transparent and lacks credibility. Beale, by contrast, has been very proactive and continues to campaign for the position. This is the perfect time for a shake up within the SFWA and Writer Beware™. It is readily apparent that change within the SFWA and Writer Beware™ is both timely and necessary.  Change would bring about more responsible reporting of literary scams and move Writer Beware™ back into a credible and worthwhile resource for the publishing industry; something that it has lacked for a long time.

Public criticism of the internal processes and workings of the SFWA (and Writer Beware™) are vital to this election process. It is rare for those within the SFWA to be so openly critical. Nevertheless, it should prove to be quite entertaining to monitor. Considering that Scalzi was voted in on only 11% of the members votes, hopefully this will result in a higher voter turnout.

A Woman’s View of “Vox Day”

Aha! you say. You’re one of those virulent feminists who hates Vox Day! I’m not, to be honest. …. I … discovered … how very coldly logical he was, and in a way that most people couldn’t follow. This led me to believe that Vox Day is a master . . . who directs the dichotomous thinking of others . . . most people, I’ve found, are black and white thinkers, even if they boast high intelligence…. He also approaches fantasy in the way I prefer it–as a scholar… his historical perspective is very well done…. At the end of the day, what one needs to bring heart to one’s parched modernity is a warrior scholar.[Emphasis added.]

Jill Domschot

Theodore Beale, while being the first to throw his hat in the ring, clearly is the underdog and “minority” in this election,   He was born during 1968, is an American writer, sometimes using the pseudonym Vox Day. He has also designed computer games and been a musician.

Beale graduated from Bucknell University in 1990. Between 1992 and 1994 he was a member of the electronic band Psykosonik, which recorded two Billboard Top 40 club play hits. In 1993, together with Andrew Lunstad, he founded a video game company named Fenris Wolf. They developed the game Rebel Moon in 1995, and its sequel Rebel Moon Rising in 1997. Fenris Wolf was developing two games,Rebel Moon Revolution and Traveler for the Sega Dreamcast, when it closed in 1999 after a legal dispute with its retail publisher GT Interactive. In 1999, under the name Eternal Warriors, Beale and Lunstad released The War in Heaven, a biblical video game published by Valusoft and distributed by GT Interactive.

In 2000, Beale published The War in Heaven, the first in a series of fantasy novels with a religious theme, entitled The Eternal Warriors which are “about good versus evil among angels, fallen and otherwise”. The third in the series was published in 2006. Beale is a member of the Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers of America (SFWA), and was a member of the Nebula Award Novel Jury in 2007. He is a contributor to the Black Gate blog, and under his pseudonym Vox Day, he wrote a weekly video game review column and other features for the St. Paul Pioneer Press. He presently uses the pen name for a conservative blog and a weekly opinion column at World Net Daily (where his father was formerly a board member) and in the past was nationally syndicated by Universal Press Syndicate.

In 2008, as Vox Day, he published The Irrational Atheist: Dissecting the Unholy Trinity of Dawkins, Harris, and Hitchens, a nontheological book devoted to criticizing the arguments presented in various books by atheist authors Richard Dawkins, Sam Harris, Christopher Hitchens, Daniel Dennett, and Michel Onfray. The book was named a 2007 Christmas recommendation by the conservative magazine, National Review. Beale’s 2008 book, Summa Elvetica: A Casuistry of the Elvish Controversy, was nominated for an American Christian Fiction Writers award in 2009.

Beale holds the design patent for WarMouse, a computer mouse with 18 buttons, a scroll wheel, a thumb-operated joystick, and 512k of memory.

Beale speaks German and Italian. He has three children.

Theodore Beale’s Books as sole author:

A Throne of Bones (2012) ISBN 978-1-935929-82-6

A Magic Broken (2012) ISBN 978-1-935929-79-6

The Wrath of Angels (2006) ISBN 978-0-7434-6982-1

The World in Shadow (2002) ISBN 978-0-671-02454-3

The War in Heaven (2000) ISBN 978-0-7434-5344-8

We are confident that Theodore Beale will put the needs of the organization first — and do the work so that the organization’s needs are addressed.

Theodore Beale is an agent of change, but this is not why we are endorsing him. We’re endorsing him because we have reviewed John Scalzi’s term as President (here, here, here and here) and we know the set of skills that one needs to succeed in the position. Simply put, Theodore Beale has them. He is the right person for the job. He has our vote, and if you are SFWA member, we hope that you will give him your vote as well. Beale is the “warrior scholar”  . . .  give him your vote!

In a most sincere and so very heart-felt fashion, Author Jim Hines apologized to The Write Agenda™ for “getting [The Write Agenda’s] sockpuppets confused with those of Ms. Ba–  . . .  the ‘anonymous’ commenter from New Jersey.’” Mr. Hines was of course referring to Agent, Barbara Bauer and commented on our “cozy” relationship with Ms. Bauer. It kinda makes you misty . . .  does it not?

Firstly, we don’t know Ms. Bauer; we know of her and the alleged “bullying” that she’s gone through.

Secondly, we’re not “cozy” with Ms. Bauer.

Thirdly, we do know that Ms. Bauer filed a 42 count complaint that alleged defamation, tortious interference with prospective economic advantage, and conspiracy to defame. Basically, it was a cyber-bullying case.

Fourthly, we do know that the named defendants were: Jenna Glatzer, MacAllister Stone, James D. Macdonald, Kent Brewster and Ann “A.C.” Crispin, Patrick Niclsen-Hayden, Teresa Nielsen-Hayden, Miss Snark The Literary Agent, a fictitious name, David L Kuzminski, Thomas S. Tully, Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers of America, Inc., Victoria C. Strauss, Shweta NarayanLesia Valentine, Christina Walden, Wikimedia Foundation and Stephan Spencer. Do you recognize any of these names?

Fifthly, we know that the defendants were accused of the allegations stated here.

Sixthly, we know that a key Defendant, Jenna Glatzer, co-authored a book on “bullying” and it was published on August 7, 2007. The Bauer v. Glatzer case was filed on January 31, 2008. (How quickly [in five months] we forgot the message of the book regarding the “bullying threat on the internet.” Shame on you Jenna.)

So, after Jim Hines posted his “apology” who do you think were the first to reply to it? Well, of course, none other than two of the Defendants in the Bauer vs. Glatzer case: Victoria Strauss and the always narcoleptic Teresa Nielsen Hayden:

Babs [Barbara Bauer] has commented on my blog [*] a time or two using the real names of people who’ve criticized her. I can always tell it’s her–not just by the IP address, but because she can’t resist mentioning googlebombs, lewd licking actions, and/or Miss Snark.

Victoria Strauss, March 12th, 2013 at 10:59 pm

Cripes, Barbara Bauer and her obsession with “lewd licking actions.” It’s just embarrassing. Where’s C. Lee (Cheryl) Nunn? Doesn’t she usually turn up for these occasions?

Teresa Nielsen Hayden, March 13th, 2013 at 1:18 am

Are these not the most indignant people? Arrogant? They will never show any remorse for their despicable actions and the allegations that were presented against them. Yes, Mr. Hines you do have egg on your face. It’s not because of what you failed to do. It’s simply that you’re one of Victoria Strauss’ sockpuppets.

Fortunately, for Mr. Hines, he was not a defendant in the Bauer vs. Glatzer case. However, say (and feel) whatever you wish about Barbara Bauer, but remember, there was only one defendant in the Bauer v. Glatzer case that was exonerated . . . Wikipedia. the case was dismissed in part and the Court left the door open for the Plaintiff to refile . . . Judge Paul Kapalko and Judge Jamie S. Perri did allow Bauer and her agency to go forward without prejudice

* It’s interesting to find Victoria Strauss refer to Writer Beware as “my blog.” Note that the header on the Writer Beware site has changed. Also note how Strauss ripped-off the 2012 BEA award for “independent” bloggers.

Could Author Jim Hines be the son of Debra Doyle & James Macdonald? (Oh, that’s Dr. Debra Doyle . . .  is her “Doctor” designation really legitimate? You know, they did question Barbara Bauer’s credentials. Things that make you go hmmmm.

We’re pleased to see Theodore Beale engaged once again as a candidate for the 2013 SFWA Presidency. He’s starting to look more and more “Presidential.” For those of you who would like to see it, it’s here. We applaud Mr. Beale for being active in this 2013 SFWA Election process. We’d like to hear more from Steven Gould but he still has not come out yet; and he’s really starting to look like an embarrassment. Seriously Mr. Gould, do you honestly think that you can just toss your hat into the ring, retain a self-serving endorsement from John Scalzi and actually win? The Write Agenda is fairly confident that the next President of the SFWA will not be elected by a mere 11% of the membership (as was Scalzi). This is anticipated to be a very active electorate process and a much closer race than anticipated. Steven Gould has yet to give the slightest indication that he’s actually a contender for this position. Gould should realize that Scalzi’s prior election strategies (i.e. the anticipation of low voter turnout) and submitting a vague platform will not work for him in the 2013 election.

Part IV: Organizational Partisanship & Biasness – The Need for Change Within the SFWA

Part 4 of 4

Death and life are in the power of the tongue.

Proverbs, 18:21

Another necessary concern regarding the SFWA 2013 Elections to consider is the ongoing negative blog postings relative to Theodore Beale. As stated previously, the negativity is reaching the level that caused the Bauer vs. Glatzer[1] lawsuit. What’s next on the horizon?

Will the Defendants in the Bauer case and their minions create a list of the “20 Worst Candidates for SFWA for SFWA President”?

Will the Defendants in the Bauer case and their minions create YouTube videos to humiliate Theodore Beale?

Will the Defendants in the Bauer case and their minions resort to the same tactics that led to the lawsuit against them?

Will the Defendants in the Bauer case and their minions resort to boycotts of Theodore Beale’s books?

Will the Defendants in the Bauer case and their minions resort to creating a “Thumbs Down” list for SFWA candidates that they deem undesirable?

Many of these individuals have already had their fair share of lawsuits and cease & desist requests.  However, there is a very qualified difference here. As an example, what Bauer vs. Glatzer lacked in terms of prosecution, it made up for in terms of customary (anticipated) blogger commentary and potential liability; unfortunately most of them have not learned their lesson yet. Moreover, new case law is always being developed regarding this kind of activity and the Teflon is getting thinner. Someone with in this group of mashuganas is going to eventually take the fall . . .  and it’s going to be a big fall.

It will be interesting to watch how this continues to play out . . . both pre-election and post election. Could Theodore Beale consider possible legal action against these Internet posters? Will it be another Cretella v. Kuzminski (i.e. The Case Against Preditors & Editors David L. Kuzminski)? Will it reach this level? Are slander and defamation actions imminent? Could Beale establish a claim for loss of opportunity?

It’s interesting to ponder these scenarios; even if they are hypothetical. However, generally speaking, most of the comments currently being made by independent bloggers would most likely not be cloaked with the protections of the Communication Decency Act (CDA 230) which protected Wikipedia but not necessarily the remaining defendants in the Bauer case; nor did it completely exonerate them.

No man [woman] is an island, entire of itself, every man [woman] is a piece of the continent, a part of the main.

William Blake

In Part III of this series, we indicated that John Scalzi was no Moses. By contrast, Moses gathered people together; he fused people and created a communal entity far more than a collection of individuals.

A group that gathers together can also move apart, and even while together, the union is not compete; an examination of the SFWA voting history clearly supports the notion that it has become segregated. There doesn’t appear to be any spirit of unity. What, if anything, binds and unifies the members of the current SFWA? How defunct is an organization where its President (Scalzi) is elected on only 11% of the entire possible vote?

Moses was the epitome of self-transcendence; every aspect of his being was committed to others. He was able to inspire transcendence. Moses has been described as a shepherd. He infused harmony even when facing different factions or contrary opinions. The establishment of unity among the membership is essential to the health of organization. The more that a leader is able to develop his/her own harmony, he/she will be more open to others and be willing to relate to them as equals. This will encourage the expression of the inner bond that all members should share . . .  versus being in a constant state of discord. What motivates a leader to rise above their personal agendas? A leader’s service should begin with marshalling the different aspects of their own being first. Then, and only then, can the organization work towards unity and harmony.

Let his days be few; and let another take his office.

Psalm 109, v8

The dreadful reign of John Scalzi is finally coming to an end. Selah! Change is also coming to the SFWA. The pending election will either result in “sweeping” change or simply a change in leadership. This is not merely a promise; this is something that can be anticipated today. Regardless of who may ultimately win the 2013 SFWA Presidential Election, Theodore Beale or Steven Gould, either of them has the potential to establish a new harmony within the organization (SFWA) and to spread that harmony among the membership. Moreover, both candidates have the opportunity to create sweeping changes within the SFWA and shed the tarnished image left by the Scalzi and his minions:

“Scalzi, current president of the Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers of America, responded by calling [Beale], ‘a jackass, and a fairly ignorant jackass at that.’”

Queerty, Free of an Agenda, Except that Gay One

SFWA members: this year it’s IMPORTANT to vote in the upcoming officer elections. Theodore Beale, a.k.a. Vox Day, is running for SFWA President. If you know the name, you’ll know why that’s scary. If you don’t, read the post below… My cat would be the better choice. And my cat is dead. [Emphasis added]

 Victoria Strauss on Facebook 2/1/13

If he did win, he’d be like the dog that caught the car–Holy shit. This wasn’t supposed to happen. What do I do now?

Victoria Strauss

Elections, and organizational change, represent the opportunity to search. The need to search is not a choice but a necessity. The search is personal (i.e. within the SFWA membership) as well as institutional. The process of searching gives all members the opportunity to take corrective measures (voting), find what is missing and identify the needs of the organization.

I’ve never expected SFWA to do anything for me because I require nothing from it. However, I have the luxury of regarding my membership as an affectation; other members of SFWA might actually want it to do something useful for them. I happen to think SFWA can be useful; I happen to think it doesn’t do a particularly good job of being useful.[Emphasis added]

John Scalzi

Contrary to John Scalzi’s dogma, dues-paying members of any organization do expect something in return; something far beyond a mere “affection.” Organizations have a purpose to establish a “commonwealth” . . .  something for the greater good . . . for its members, not something that an elected official can be half-heartedly dedicated to. Admitted, Scalzi was honest about this point and where his priorities stood:

I’ve been a SFWA member long enough to know that it’s a fairly thankless position, with lots of herding cats and dealing with aggravating minutiae, and I have a career to look after at the moment. [Emphasis added]

 -         John Scalzi

***

Shaming another in public is like shedding blood.

Talmud, v6

In conclusion, the huge difference in these organizational elections is that they do not include political parties . . . they involve people . . . human beings. Accordingly, they should be civil and partisan. This particular race for SFWA President is turning into something very political . . . with the same cast of characters showing their true colors again. However, it’s unique that the negative attacks are being waged against one of their own . . . Theodore Beale. Theodore Beale’s only crimes are that he writes controversial pieces and that he disagrees with John Scalzi. Being controversial is nothing new when it comes to past (or present) SFWA Presidents. Why is it such a big issue now? Unfortunately, this whole ordeal is making Scalzi and his minions look like a bunch of schlemiels.

“Scalzi, current president of the Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers of America, responded by calling [Beale], ‘a jackass, and a fairly ignorant jackass at that.’”

Queerty, Free of an Agenda, Except that Gay One

John Scalzi had the opportunity to stand up (for once) and demonstrate that he had true leadership qualities. Criticism and contrary opinion are to be expected for elected officials . . .  Scalzi doesn’t appear to have learned that lesson. Instead, in a very farcical move, Scalzi has rose up in opposition to Beale by publically endorsing Steven Gould; not a very “Presidential” maneuver when an unbiased stance would have given him the appearance of being a leader. However, Beale has given us all a glimpse of how “Presidential” he is. We do not ever recall an outgoing president of the SFWA to have ever publically endorsed one candidate over the other. Again, John Scalzi never was and never will be a Moses.

People join organizations, such as the SFWA, to have a voice, to be represented and to be members of a group. This 2013 election is the perfect time to deliver the SFWA from the mindsets of the likes of Scalzi and readjust so that it can take on a more purposeful mindset. In choosing our leaders, we should not select only those who are like us in temperament and personality. Nor should we choose only those who act in a certain way that we find agreeable to our personal lives and acceptable standards. In selecting the next SFWA President you will have to abandon your proneness to conformity and/or complacency.

Educate yourself and vote accordingly . . .  but DO VOTE and encourage other SFWA members to vote.

Part III: John Scalzi Was No Moses – Evaluation of Leadership & the Potential to Lead

Philosophically, I’m opposed to having only one candidate for a leadership position of any organization I am involved with. I don’t think it speaks well for the organizational health of the body; it suggests an apathetic membership. One can debate whether the membership is apathetic because the organization is not useful enough to be engaged in, or whether the membership is simply apathetic in a general sense (or both). Whatever the cause, it’s not an encouraging sign.” [Emphasis added]

-         John Scalzi

John Scalzi, in prior SFWA elections, ran for office unopposed. Has his opinion changed since 2007? Or, is this flip-flopping and waffling? Let’s evaluate Scalzi’s term in office and use some questions as the criteria (or balancing test) to evaluate the fitness of the 2013 candidates (i.e. Theodore Beale & Steven Gould). If you are a SFWA member, you should consider these prior to casting your vote.

In reviewing Scalzi’s departure sermon, do we really need to be made aware of his “personal” triumphs while he held office? It’s really no big secret that Scalzi (who wrote several books while in office), Victoria Strauss and Ann “A.C.” Crispin have used their positions with the SFWA to expand their marketing activities. True Leadership involves self-sacrifice . . . not self-promotion.

“ . . .  [I]f I am elected president, you should know now that I will view the position as something I am doing in addition to my writing career, not something of equal importance. I might as well be honest with you on that score.” [Emphasis added]

-         John Scalzi

A true leader identifies completely with his/her people (membership), their purpose and is willing to give up everything for them. Did Scalzi epitomize this kind of leadership? How much did he give of himself? That is, did he devote himself to undertaking the duties and fulfilling his responsibilities relative to strengthening the SFWA membership? How much did he sacrifice? Did he sacrifice everything or was his own self-interest and self-promotion a version of his own “Golden Calf”? How encompassing was his commitment to the SFWA and its membership? Did his commitment extend to every member of the SFWA . . .  or, was it handed out arbitrarily or selectively? What steps were taken, during his term in office, to ensure the timely filing of compliance documents with state and federal officials?

“I’ve never expected SFWA to do anything for me because I require nothing from it. However, I have the luxury of regarding my membership as an affectation; other members of SFWA might actually want it to do something useful for them. I happen to think SFWA can be useful; I happen to think it doesn’t do a particularly good job of being useful.”

-         John Scalzi

Conversely, to what degree were all members of the SFWA able to connect with Scalzi? Was he accessible? How much influence did he weld? How effective has his leadership been? Are there still SFWA members that are in exile? As a “shepherd” did he sustain the external faith (i.e. non-members) in the organization . . .  thereby causing individuals to actually want to join the organization? Did he nurture faith (or doubt) with the members of the organization? Did the membership grow or deplete during his term in office? (Note: Beale and Gould have both raised concerns about “membership” in their platforms.) Did he take steps to effectuate a positive culture within the SFWA?

I’ve never expected SFWA to do anything for me because I require nothing from it. However, I have the luxury of regarding my membership as an affectation; other members of SFWA might actually want it to do something useful for them. I happen to think SFWA can be useful; I happen to think it doesn’t do a particularly good job of being useful

-         John Scalzi

During Scalzi’s term in office, based on the answers to these questions, what standards, if any, did he set for future Presidents of the SFWA? Would either of the two candidates want to emulate any of his leadership qualities . . .  or merely view it as an “affection”? A true leader is able to extend his commitment to everyone . . . even those that rise direct in opposition to his own values, beliefs and concerns. Your own answers to these questions should help you evaluate both of the 2013 candidates. In addition, we hope that the candidates internalize these criteria and update their platforms to address the SFWA’s current short comings.

“I’ve been a SFWA member long enough to know that it’s a fairly thankless position, with lots of herding cats and dealing with aggravating minutiae, and I have a career to look after at the moment.”

 -         John Scalzi

In our opinion, Scalzi was no Moses in terms of his leadership and commitment to the SFWA. The past election results appear to indicate that his popularity was questionable. In addition, upon first review of the current platforms, it appears that a vote for Steven Gould is a vote for John Scalzi.
